Project 7: Oil Pastels

Description: In class, we learned about the life cycle of a butterfly, then traced the outline of the wing of a butterfly, making a pattern in the wing. After that, we choose 2-3 cool OR warm colors to color the wing with. Once we are done coloring the wing with oil pastels, we use watercolors to paint the background of the butterfly.

Alternate Activity: With this activity, we could learn about the life cycle of a butterfly, then make tissue paper window clings. This is when you put tissue paper on a piece of laminating paper, then laminate the other side, then stick it to the window.

Lesson 6: Clay

Description: For this project, we created 3 different foods from different food groups out of clay using the coiling technique and the slip and score technique.

Picture:

Alternate Activity: This project would be good for a Mother's Day activity for kids. We could show them how to make clay cups with a handle so that they know how to slip, score, and add details to their artwork. Then they can paint their artwork as well.

Lesson 5: 3D Paper Projects

Description: In this project, my partner and I showed the class how to create an accordion-style piece that gives a 3D affect. We used 2 pieces of white paper and drew two trees on each side of one piece of paper, coloring one for one season of the year, and one for another. Then the students colored their trees and measured 12 inches of their paper, making a tick mark for each inch. They cut out each inch of paper and glued it to the second piece of white paper, then folded that second piece of paper accordion style. The result gave an illusion of two different seasons, one season when you tilted the paper a certain way, and another season when you tilted it the other way.

Alternate Activity: We talked about seasons for our project; however, I think it would also be fun to just use this as an activity in art class. The students could use one medium on one half of the paper in black and white, then use another medium with color for the other side to create more of an illusion.

Lesson 4: Printmaking

Description: For this activity we learned about how to make different prints and where they originated from. Then we used ink with at least 3 different colors, 3 different patterns, and 3 vegetable prints.

Picture:

Alternate Activity: This would be a good activity for kids learning about different types of plants or learning about different cultures and where printmaking originated from. Then using paint instead of ink so it's not as messy.

Lesson 3: Paper Projects

Description: In this project we learned about different patters as well as making our own "Whoville" from the animations of Dr. Seuss. We had to make 3 patterns of 3 different strips of paper, then we glued 7 pieces of paper down to make our town with two different folds for some of the pieces.

Picture:

Alternate Activity: A different activity we could do for this would be to make paper flowers for Mother's Day after learning about plants in science.

Lesson 2: Painting

Description: In this project we learned about different techniques of painting. In my project I used a white crayon and colored on the paper before using the water colors. While using the water colors I made sure the paper was wet and dotted it with blue paint. On top, I added a little salt to create texture and put mountains at the bottom of the page.

Picture:

Alternate Activity: For an alternate activity, I would have the students paint a certain ecosystem/terrain from a science lesson that we learned about. Then they would present them to the class.

Lesson 1: Drawing

Description: In this lesson we were taught how to draw different patterns and how to use points of view. We used a ruler and made a dot at the center of the page then drew lines to the dot from the squares around it to create this picture. Then, we drew patterns in the squares and colored the extended part with oil pastel.

Alternate Activity: This activity could be used with geometric shapes. The students have to draw at least 3 different shapes that they learned in math, then they will draw their "shadow" like the extended parts of the squares above.

Project 7: Oil Pastels

Description: In class, we learned about the life cycle of a butterfly, then traced the outline of the wing of a butterfly, making a patter...
